It happened again! Every year without fail the strings of Christmas lights that I so carefully took down last year, rolled up, and put in a storage tub in the attic are tangled up when I take them out to hang them up! Does someone live in my attic to torment me with tangled lights?
Maybe you have experienced the tangled light mystery; I think it may be somehow connected to the missing sock mystery. In fact, it may be the same person who does both! Maybe I need to check the attic for my missing socks!
Thousands of years before Jesus was born as a babe in a Bethlehem manger, the Old Testament writers would declare that He would be “Light.” Isaiah wrote, “But you will have the Lord for an everlasting light, and your God for your glory.” (Is. 60:14) Jesus said of Himself, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) John wrote in his glorious description of eternity in Revelation 21:23, “And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
Yet, even with all those declarations of who Jesus would be, we see the Light and our display of the Light “tangled” in our presentation and proclamation. In our busy lives (like at Christmas shopping time!) we often fail to let others see “the Light” in our actions, attitudes, and words. We “tangle” up our witness and do not let others readily see our “display of Light,” who He is to us and who He wants to be to them. While our failings do not keep Jesus from being who He said He was and who He is, the Light of the world and the Light of glory, sadly we do make it more difficult for others to see the Light.
Throughout the month of December, our message series is titled: Untangling the Light! The messages are intended to help us see God’s plan for the Light, Jesus Christ, to shine to all men. Hopefully we will discover some ways we might, in our living, sharing, and giving, reveal the Light not as a mystery but as the most magnificent discovery one can make.
Join us as we “untangle and turn up” the Light!
