Hike on!

I recently took a break for a day trip to do a little hiking and enjoy some of God’s magnificent creation. It’s always amazing to me the refocus that can come when we pause to consider what we already know…that He is in control of it all!event_120344862

Some of you have probably hiked the trail northwest of Payson/Strawberry that goes down to Fossil Creek. The internet said it was a “moderately difficult” hike, 4 miles down, 4 miles back out. Being out of shape made it mostly difficult, not just moderately so. I think they must have figured the mileage back out incorrectly because I am sure it was at least 10 miles! Having never been down to the creek, only having read about it, I must say I was more than disappointed to find a dry creek bed greeting me after 4 miles down! All this way, for this?

Then I pulled out my directions. (Yes, I am a man; and, yes, I do follow directions…sometimes!) It was there I read: once you cross the creek, you need to continue another .4 miles west to the spring. I did. From that point west, the spring fed a very alive stream that was cold, clear, and wide with verdant vegetation and big trees along both sides. Absolutely beautiful (see my Facebook pictures). I sat down on a large rock, spread out my picnic of Gatorade and a Lunchable and just took it all in. Several Scripture thoughts ran through my mind: Living Water, my Rock and my strength, still waters (the pools were quiet and almost motionless), and the call to “follow directions and go deeper.” The Lord is such a Great Teacher!

What if? What if I had not followed the directions and gone further? You do know the answer to that, right? A “dry” experience would have been the end of my journey. By going further in His Word, His will, and His way, manifold lessons abound and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking!

I took a picture of the sign posted at the trailhead. It stated: Warning–Do Not Plan on Rescue! (It asked some questions and reminded you to be prepared before you undertook such a hike, stating that Gila County authorities would not guarantee coming to your rescue; and there is no cell phone service at the bottom!)

The Lord did! Amen!
