An encouraging word!

I read of a children’s Sunday School class that was concerned about one of their member’s mother’s, who was in the hospital. Their teacher suggested that each child sign a card she had brought to send to the mother and write a Bible verse after their name. The children all started thumbing through their Bibles, looking for verses. One little boy opened his Bible and soon had his selection, Matthew 5:26: “Truly, I say to you, you will never get out ‘til you have paid the last penny.” I am not sure how much encouragement that brought with hospital bills what they are today!

Whatever the time of need, we often need a word of encouragement. God’s Word is filled with “encouraging words” but just picking one out of context is not the wise thing to do. Many times our need and how we respond to life’s difficulties is determined by our attitude as we look at the need. You might recall Joseph’s father, Jacob. When he thought he had lost Joseph and was about to lose his youngest, Benjamin, he said: “All things are against me.” (Genesis 42:36) When we “think, live, and speak” as if all things are against us, most likely it will seem that is the case.

Much more appropriate are the words of Paul in Romans 8 where he says, “All things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” (v.28) If you are needing encouragement or seeking to offer encouragement, chose your words, even your Bible words, wisely!

The hospital bill? Well, I’m not sure I have a verse for that dilemma; but if you discover one, let me know and I will share it with some of the many I visit weekly who are in the hospital…waiting for the bill!

Where never is heard, a discouraging word…
